You can use a computer or mobile device to access files and applications on another computer over the Internet with Chrome Remote Desktop.


Chrome Remote Desktop is a genuinely superb piece of free software that's incredibly user friendly and accessible to all without needing any amount of technical know-how. Just install the two.   • In the same Chrome Remote Desktop page, in the section 'My Computers', you'll see the computer you just added. Click on it, enter the code (possibly checking the checkbox to avoid entering the password again at the next connection).

  1. Download the Chrome Remote Desktop app.
  2. On your computer, open Chrome.
  3. In the address bar at the top, type chrome://apps, and press Enter.
  4. Click Chrome Remote Desktop .
  5. Under 'My Computers,' click Get started.
  6. Click Enable remote connections.
  7. Enter a PIN and re-type the PIN. Click OK.
  8. Click Yes to install the Chrome Remote Desktop service.
  9. Confirm the Google Account and enter the PIN again to continue.

The computer you allowed should show up under 'My Computers.'


Mac

  1. Download the Chrome Remote Desktopapp.
  2. On your computer, open Chrome.
  3. In the address bar at the top, type chrome://apps, and press Enter.
  4. Click Chrome Remote Desktop .
  5. Under 'My Computers,' click Get started.
  6. Click Enable remote connections. Then, follow the onscreen instructions.
  7. Chrome will download a .dmg file. Click Save.
  8. Once the file downloads, open it.
  9. Follow the on-screen prompts to finish installation. Then, return to Chrome.
  10. To turn remote access on for your computer, click OK.
  11. Enter a PIN and re-type the PIN, then click OK.
  12. When a box appears, unlock the panel and confirm your account and PIN again.
  13. The 'Remote connections for this computer have been enabled' message will appear. Click OK to dismiss it.

The computer you allowed should show up under 'My Computers.'


Linux

Step 1: Download and set up Chrome Remote Desktop

Download the Chrome Remote Desktop app.

Step 2: Install the Debian package for the host components

Step 3: Create a virtual desktop session

If you have Ubuntu 12.04, skip to Step 4.

  1. Look in /usr/share/xsessions/ for the .desktop file for your preferred desktop environment.
    • For example, Cinnamon has a file named 'cinnamon.desktop' with the following command: gnome-session --session=cinnamon
  2. Create a file called .chrome-remote-desktop-session in your home directory with the following content:
    • exec /usr/sbin/lightdm-session '<YOUR_EXEC_COMMAND>'
  3. Replace <YOUR_EXEC_COMMAND> with the command at the end of your .desktop file:
    • In the example for Cinnamon, the correct command is exec /usr/sbin/lightdm-session 'gnome-session --session=cinnamon'
    • Unity desktops require some additional code. The full command is DESKTOP_SESSION=ubuntu XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=Unity XDG_RUNTIME_DIR=/run/user/$(id -u) exec /usr/sbin/lightdm-session 'gnome-session --session=ubuntu'
  4. Save the file called '.chrome-remote-desktop-session' .

Step 4: Allow remote connections

  1. On your computer, open Chrome.
  2. In the address bar at the top, type chrome://apps, and press Enter.
  3. Click Chrome Remote Desktop .
  4. Under 'My Computers,' click Get started.
  5. Click Enable remote connections.
  6. Enter a PIN and re-type the PIN. Then click OK.
  7. Dismiss the confirmation dialog.
Chromebook
Download the Chrome Remote Desktop app.


You can give others access to your computer. They'll have full access to your apps, files, emails, documents and history.
  1. On your computer, open Chrome.
  2. In the address bar at the top, type chrome://apps, and press Enter.
  3. Click Chrome Remote Desktop .
  4. To create an access code, click Share.
  5. Send the code to the person you want to let use your computer.
  6. When the other person enters the access code, they’ll see your email address and have full control of your computer.
  7. To end a sharing session, click Stop sharing.

Access a computer remotely

  1. On your computer, open Chrome.
  2. In the address bar at the top, type chrome://apps, and press Enter.
  3. Click Chrome Remote Desktop .
  4. Pick what you want to access. You might need to click Get Started first.
    • If you’re accessing your computer, click it.
    • If you’re accessing another computer that’s been shared with you, click Access.
  5. Enter the PIN or access code required to log in..
  6. Click Connect.

For your security, all remote desktop sessions are fully encrypted.

Stop a remote session

When you’re finished, go to the center of the page and click the Down arrow Disconnect.

  1. On your computer, open Chrome.

  4. Next to the computer you want to remove, click Disable remote access.


  1. On each computer where you want to remove Chrome Remote Desktop access, remove the app:
    1. Go to Control Panel Programs Add/Remove Programs.
    2. Find the 'Chrome Remote Desktop' application.
    3. Click Remove.
  2. To also remove Chrome Remote Desktop from your account, remove the extension:

  1. On each computer where you want to remove Chrome Remote Desktop access, uninstall the app:
    1. Find the 'Chrome Remote Desktop Host Uninstaller' application.
    2. Launch the uninstaller and click Uninstall.
  2. To also remove Chrome Remote Desktop from your account, remove the extension:
    1. On your computer, open Chrome.
    2. In the address bar at the top, type chrome://apps, and press Enter.
    3. Right-click 'Chrome Remote Desktop' and click Remove from Chrome.
    4. A confirmation dialog appears. Click Remove.

Troubleshooting tips

If you're having problems with Chrome Remote Desktop, try these tips:

  • You need to be connected to the Internet to share or access a computer. If the page won't open, check your computer’s network settings.
  • Antivirus software might prevent you from using Chrome Remote Desktop. Make sure your antivirus allows the following:
    • Outbound UDP traffic
    • Inbound UDP responses
    • Traffic on TCP ports 443 (HTTPS) and 5222 (XMPP)
  • If the computer being accessed is on a work or school network, it might not let you give others access. For more information, contact your administrator.
  • Make sure you're using the latest version of Chrome or Chrome OS.
